We birthed a blog at the Inside Outside School. I'd like to discuss democratic education here, as well as place based education. We are creating a space for something amazing.

Somehow it is the fifth week of school and the blog is here with nothing reported.  It is all so new.  Right now, our Nia teacher is working with a group of laughing children while the rest of the students are playing frisbee golf on our course.  We have 14 students in our new school.  Everything is new, teaching in a democratic school, educating for human greatness, being a director.  It is not without difficulty, but it is such an awesome experience.  I am loving every day of this life.  In the afternoon, just before we leave for the day, we have "harvest" time.  Each person in the community has the opportunity to share what the best part of the day was.  So often it was nature literacy time.   We actually get to go hang out in the creek every afternoon.  The children name each of the special shallow areas where we are able to access the creek.  Here the quality of imagination is enriched as the children invent their own games.  They are playing house in the creek.   Their house is a riparian forest.  It is exactly what I hoped for.  Promoting a business, working with accountants,  learning Quickbooks, all of the business pieces of this are somehow  chugging forward, but the spirit of joy in learning is flying freely like a beautiful butterfly above us offering something wonderful and unique each day.

Deborah: I believe children need to have more time in the great outdoors and no time bubbling in answer sheets to prepare for standardized tests.

Students:  posting happenings and other interesting stuff.  Go IOS Mockingbirds!
