The Farmer's Basket

Picture
Creating the first garden bed was a blast!  We designed what we call "the farmer's basket" out of reclaimed branches and bark from an old burn pile.  We used a "lasgna" garden method to prepare the bed for fall planting.   Over the course of our first year we added a straw bale garden, two cinder block gardens, two wooden framed gardens, and a keyhole garden with a rock perimeter.  We are now enjoying onions, basil, tomatoes and squash in abundance.
Update:  That was our first garden in year 1.  Now in our 14th year, each class has their own gardens.  The Primary class is responsible for the fairy gardens.  The intermediate class has been planting food for our bees.  The upper elementary class is preparing for market with veggies.
