Language Arts

Our Language Arts block is an interdisciplinary approach to learning, infusing science and social studies into the process of learning to use our reading and writing skills to learn about the world around us. This year we are focusing heavily on a Writer's Workshop approach to writing, and this Fall Semester we are focusing heavily on Narrative Writing techniques. We are reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen as a whole class and investigating how setting can change your characters. We will also be investigating extreme settings and survival skills.

Math

Inside Outside School uses the Stepping Stones math curriculum. We will be breaking into three main learning groups to teach 4th-6th grade concepts. Whole group lessons are a mix of direct teaching of concepts, collaborative games to extend and enhance our understanding, and applied practice of specific concepts and skills. Students will also use stations for both independent learning and cooperative math games to further extend their understanding of math concepts taught in their group lessons.

Science

Fall science curriculum is inspired by the film "Kiss the Ground" which outlines how regenerative agriculture can combat climate change. We wiill examine the carbon cycle, explore the process of photosynthesis, and evalute human impacts on climate change. We'll delve into soil science and implement a campus-wide project to compost and build soil for our gardens. Gardening will incorporate regenerative practices, and nature skills will offer time for observation and interacting with our rich natural environment on campus.

Social Studies

This year we will be using "The Story of Change" to guide our Social Studies. We will use the lens of change to look at Texas History, the Story of the US Revolution, and more. We will look at other stories of change as well, such as our changing technology through the decades, how people and societies change, and how we all change and grow as individuals.
