Reading takes place in small literature circles. Groups read books together, talk about themes, characters, etc, and work on vocabulary and comprehension.
For writing, hawks have mini-lessons and work time, as well as peer and teacher conferences. They also work on spelling.
Math takes place in small groups, grouped by level. Students have short mini-lessons, and then work time. They also play a variety of group games, sometimes as small groups, sometimes as a full class, and have choice activities such as exploring Math Playground, or working on sudoku and other logic puzzles. Math is a great time for cooking, gardening, and building projects as well!
The hawks are folks of extremely varied interests! We spend time working on independent studies, we like to cook and garden and explore the woods, we get wrapped up in games, we read lots of books, we do art, and pretty much wherever the wind might blow us!
