Middle School Offerings

Hero/Shero Program

The hero/shero recognizes every challenge they face as an opportunity to learn something new about themselves and welcomes the opportunity. This is one aspect of what it means to be a hero/shero.

Participants will create life-maps, mold masks, take 5 guided journeys, explore the Green Knight story, The Iliad, and other world myths, read and write poetry, and compare contrast selected mythic movies, song lyrics and discuss their connections to the participants’ everyday life. The idea is to give the young people their own mythological adventure and record their experiences.

The Group starts at 8:30 each Monday and ends at 12:30 starting September 9th. Participants will need to provide their own lunch if they are staying for the afternoon. A Journey workbook will  be provided. From 12:30-3:30 each Monday, an optional afternoon gardening and nature skills apprenticeship at the Inside Outside School next door is available. Cost is $200.00 for morning only and $300.00 for the full day per month. We are looking for a minimum of 3 participants and a maximum of 6 participants.

Don Hale has been teaching Language Arts and Theatre at the High School and Middle School level for over thirty years. He is a certified academic coach, a playwright, director, actor, and Academic Adviser at St. Francis School.

Gardening Apprenticeship

Monday afternoon Gardening and Nature Skills Apprenticeship will be under the mentorship of Vikki Hutto.  Participants will begin with lunch at 12:30 and begin gardening and nature skill work at 1:00. Participants will join IOS for self-directed Nature Literacy in the woods from 2:30 -3:15 and be picked up from the Inside Outside School between 3:30 and 4:00.

Student Internships

Students will work as interns with a teacher.  Participants will work with either the art teacher, the music/theater teacher or the gardening teacher to assist the teacher and work with students.  Once a month, they will work as an intern for elective classes. Students will have mentoring guidance for this internship.
