Students in the Raccoon and Hawk class got a miniunit on garden herb identification. We looked at 3 sets of similar herbs and compared characteristics that made them alike and different. We examined thyme v oregano, lemon balm v mint, and sage v lambs ear. We collected samples and recorded leaf size and characteristics on T charts in our science notebooks. We also examined our class data and showed students how to plot it on a graph to help us visualize trends in information. From our data, we make conclusions that will help us identify these herbs in the future. At the end of the unit, we bundled our herbs and took them home to enjoy!
